Dominic de Guzman, † 6 August 1221; born in Caleruega, Spain; founded the Order of Preachers [O.P.], today numbering some 5,770 religious; an elective, fraternal form of community life devoted to contemplation, study, and preaching; sought to bring Albigensians back into the Church through preaching and living evangelical poverty; Order's ideal (coined by St. Thomas Aquinas): Contemplari et contemplata aliis tradere; canonized in 1234.
