Camillus de Lellis, † 1614 at Rome; born at Chieti in the Abruzzi in 1550; soldier addicted to gambling; his conversion led him to found (1582) a society (Camillians [M.I.]), today numbering 1,125 religious, which established hospitals and cared for the sick with affection and diligence; patron of nurses, of the sick, and of hospitals.
